Abortion Coverage Would Cost $1 Per Month

November 11th, 2009 by Al Lewis (alewis)

Even assuming that the last posting is not actuarially correct (is too!), the cost of adding abortion to coverage is about $1/month per individual, or maybe $3 for a family.

How do I know this?  Well, unlike everyone else bloviating about this issue on both sides, I’ve actually run the numbers, which isn’t hard.  There are about 800,000 abortions annually in the US.  Figure $1000/abortion.  That’s $800,000,000.  Divide that number by the 200,000,000 adults <65 (dependents are covered by adults and don’t buy policies themselves) and you get about $4/year.  Figure a lot of self- selection into the rider (assume people >45 without dependent girls won’t buy in, for example), and figure no one buys into the rider on principle alone, and you get about $1/month.

This much fuss hasn’t been made over a dollar since Trading Places

It’s not about the cost, Al, it’s about the moral issue. Believe it or not, the majority of the population is opposed to the murder of babies as a method of birth control. So yes, I add my voice to the fuss “over a dollar”.

You’ve heard the squeeky wheel gets the oil? That’s exactly how this holocaust was permitted to start in the US - the abortion proponents made a whole lot more noise than the opponents. And yes, it’s a holocaust, with over 40,000,000 killed so far.

The majority tends to be silent, much to the detriment of this country. If everyone expressed their opinions, we wouldn’t have had the pork-filled stimulus and we wouldn’t be threatend by the government tax and power grab of the health care/insurance issue and cap-and-trade issue.

Actually, the “over a dollar” think was supposed to be an apolitical observation, as this is an apolitical website dedicated to original insights, of which this was one. Pro or con, no one has pointed out that we are talking $1 a month here. For people who support health reform, that insight suggests that they should suck it up and vote for it with the rider.

  3. Tooz Says:

Regardless of whatever side of the issue people take, the abortion issue can never be apolitical, so whether the cost of abortion coverage is negligent or $50/month/person, it’s still going to be an issue. It will be allowed or not allowed, covered or not covered, based on the usbject, not the cost.

Wasn’t the bet $5 in “Trading Places?”
