Yankees Have Acknowledged Our Efforts — a First Step

Thursday, January 6th, 2011 by Al Lewis (alewis)

I got a message back from Jason Zillo, who was quite polite and respectful.  (And, I am sure to the dismay of many Sox fans out there, Jason does not seem the slightest bit Evil –  on the official Scale of Evil, I’d place him closer to Dudley Do-Right or Maxwell Smart than Snidely Whiplash [...]

ALS Gehrig Jersey Progress Notes and Tonight’s (1/3) WBZ-1030 Call-in

Monday, January 3rd, 2011 by Al Lewis (alewis)

The good news is that we appear to have been the most visited ALS website and facebook page last month.    The bad news is that we did not make progress in our goal of creating this new sustainable, visible, source of funding and awareness.    This is probably mostly because the Yankees and all the rest of [...]

My own story of ALS and how this site came to be

Monday, December 27th, 2010 by Al Lewis (alewis)

As this blog has morphed, at least for now, from a creative idea-generation site into a grassroots ALS fundraising site to create what will hopefully be — with the Yankees’ cooperation –  a very potent and sustainable course of ALS funding, I  have been very moved by the stories, comments, and photos.  (I am sure [...]

Thank you for your comments…keep them coming in and we WILL move the Yankees

Tuesday, December 21st, 2010 by Al Lewis (alewis)

I have to think they aren’t an Evil Empire and that my requests have just gotten lost in the bureaucracy.  Keep the comments coming in.  Keep forwarding things to dcaraballo@yankees.com (and just to keep ‘em honest, newstip@globe.com )
I am very moved by all these comments, and they are bringing back many bittersweet memories of my [...]

Join ALS Campaign to Get the Yankees to Sell Lou Gehrig Jerseys and Become the World’s Nicest Evil Empire

Friday, December 17th, 2010 by Al Lewis (alewis)

If you or a loved one has been touched by ALS, then you know how little is known about it.  More basic research is needed, which requires raising money.   An easy way to raise money would be for the Yankees to sell Lou Gehrig #4 replica jerseys and donate the profits.  (We are not asking to donate all [...]

Paul Pierce Got The Problem Right But Missed the Solution

Sunday, November 28th, 2010 by Al Lewis (alewis)

Paul Pierce noted that kids need to exercise more and adults need to encourage them. http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/editorial_opinion/oped/articles/2010/11/25/have_a_ball/
However, he overlooked the clear impediment to that goal and missed the obvious solution to it.
The problem:  By definition most school gymnasiums are closed during the times that kids have available for exercise.

The solution:  Opening them for evenings and [...]

A Lottery that Preys Upon the Rich

Friday, November 19th, 2010 by Al Lewis (alewis)

Imagine a way to raise money that, like a lottery, is totally voluntary, but, unlike a lottery, doesn’t prey upon the poor or feed gambling addictions. That is what happens if, instead of raffling low-numbered license plates, states auction them. These aren’t kidneys. There is no reason not to sell them to the [...]

NO to Year-Round Daylight Savings Time. YES to moving the time zones west

Sunday, November 14th, 2010 by Al Lewis (alewis)

Time zones were established when people went to bed at 8:00, before anyone had eletricity. We need to move them all west at least 500 miles. Moving to year-round daylight savings time is not the answer. That doesn’t increase our daylight in the summer, when the sun rises an hour or two before we do, and sets long before we are ready to turn in. Added evening daylight, which reconfigured time zones will provide, will boost tourism, keeping downtowns buzzing while boosting retail sales, just like in Europe, where it’s light until 9:00 all summer.

Increase Social Security Checks Without Increasing The Deficit

Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010 by Al Lewis (alewis)

Social Security payments have not been adjusted for inflation in two years.  However, there is an easy way for the Government to increase their purchasing power for senior citizens:  The ShopAmerica Gift Card.
Instead of just sending out the checks, suppose the Government gave people a choice:  You can either have this month’s check or you [...]

Immigrants Are The Problem: We Don’t Have Enough Of Them

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010 by Al Lewis (alewis)

The United States allows people to immigrate if they are going to create 50 or more jobs here.   Why not reduce that threshold to, for instance, 20 or more jobs?
If that reduced threshold encourages another 10,000 people to immigrate, we gain 200,000 jobs.  Plus, we add 10,000 more people to buy our unsold houses.
If I’m [...]
