This posting is reprised from February, when New Hampshire did the same thing that New York just did yesterday. Both legislatures missed an opportunity to come up with a “radical centrist” answer that would satisfy all but the extremists on both sides.

Why are there only two options — gays get to marry, like straight couples, or they don’t? We propose that a new word be created to cover marriage between gays OR between straights, with exactly the same rights as a regular marriage. Gays use the new word and straights can use it if they want. But — respecting the opinions of those who think that traditional marriage should only be between a man and a woman — the regular word “marriage” is reserved for straights. Sort of like the word “Ms.” was created to allow both unmarried and married women to use if they want, but they can still use the other words if they like.
